The Jaguar I-Pace has been declared the big winner at the 2019 World Car Awards taking place in front of the media at the New York Auto Show. All told, the British electric SUV bagged three trophies in as many categories.
World Car of the Year: Jaguar I-Pace
In the 2019 World Car of the Year, the I-Pace was favored over the Audi E-Tron and Volvo S60/V60. It also came first in the Car Design of the Year and Green Car of the Year categories, where it beat the Suzuki Jimny and Volvo XC40, and the Audi E-Tron and Hyundai Nexo, respectively.
“It is an honor that the Jaguar I-Pace has received such an accolade from the prestigious World Car jurors”, said JLR CEO Ralf Speth. “We started with an ideal, to move towards our Destination Zero vision; zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion. I-Pace is our first step to achieving this, and it was conceived when EVs were little more than a niche choice.”

Performance Car of the Yea: McLaren 720S
Candidates in the Performance Car of the Year category must be produced in at least 2,000 units annually. They also have to be on sale on at least two continents between January 1, 2018, and May 31, 2019. The McLaren 720S has met these standards, while also impressing the jurors, who awarded it with the trophy.
“We feel grateful anytime one of our cars wins an award, but to have the 720S named World Performance Car is particularly special”, commented McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt. “We believe the 720S is a revolutionary step forward for both McLaren, as well as the supercar segment, and to have it recognized in this way by an organization made up of the most esteemed media across the globe is a great honor.”
Luxury Car of the Year: Audi A7
Marking the 10th World Car award for Audi was the A7, which came first in the Luxury Car of the Year. The executive four-door coupe turned out to be more popular than the other two finalists, the BMW 8-Series and Audi Q8.
“It is a great honor for Audi to win the ‘World Luxury Car’ award twice in a row,” said Audi’s Board Member for Technical Development, Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler. “We are very proud of this award because it shows Audi’s ability to develop leading premium cars in various segments.”
Urban Car of the Year: Suzuki Jimny
Suzuki was also awarded with a trophy for the new Jimny, which was declared the Urban Car of the Year. The small SUV faced Hyundai and Kia in the big final, and their AH2/Santro and Soul.
“We at Suzuki are greatly honored to receive this award”, said President Toshihiro Suzuki. “The Jimny is the one-and-only, compact, authentic off-roader, and we have kept true to this concept for almost 50 years. It now has many fans around the world, who enjoy its excellent performance and one-of-a-kind functional design, both on and off-road.”
